Black Friday 2026,
without the tricks.

Black Friday falls on Friday, November 27, 2026, with Cyber Monday on November 30 and most stores discounting for the whole week around them. Some of those discounts are real. Some are prices raised in October so they can be cut in November. This guide is how to tell the difference, what the law already promises you, and how the free tools that offer to help are actually paid.

In short

A discount is only real against a price that was actually charged. In the EU the reference must be the lowest price of the previous 30 days; the UK, US, Brazil and Australia all prohibit made-up "was" prices.

Compare the exact model and variant, item price first, shipping second, and read who the seller is before you read the discount. The lookalike model and the fee added at checkout are the two traps that catch careful people.

Most free shopping extensions are paid a commission by the store when you buy. That is legal; it becomes a problem when it decides what you are shown. Muchita takes no commission and never touches your checkout.

The calendar

When the sales actually are.

Black Friday is the day after the US Thanksgiving holiday, so the date moves every year. In 2026 the whole season runs from Singles' Day in mid-November to the January clearances. Very few stores discount on one day anymore: expect a "Black Week" or a whole "Black November", which means the Friday price is often the same price you could have had on Monday.

Day Date in 2026 Where it matters Worth knowing
Singles' Day Wednesday, November 11 China first, now global marketplaces Fixed date every year; the largest online shopping day in the world by sales volume.
Black Friday Friday, November 27 US origin; now most of Europe, the UK, Brazil, Australia, Israel The day after US Thanksgiving. Many stores start the same prices on the Monday before.
Small Business Saturday Saturday, November 28 US, UK Independent shops. Fewer deep discounts, more local offers.
Cyber Monday Monday, November 30 US origin; online everywhere Usually the last day of the same campaign. Prices rarely move much between Friday and Monday.
Green Monday Monday, December 14 US Traditionally the last big online day before standard shipping stops arriving in time for Christmas.
Boxing Day Saturday, December 26 UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand Clearance pricing. Check the returns window before you buy a gift on this day.
January sales Late December into January Europe Season clearance. In France the winter soldes dates are fixed by the government each year.

Regional names for the same week: Black Week in Germany and Poland, Black Friday in Brazil on the same date, where consumers coined Black Fraude for staged discounts and the São Paulo consumer office publishes a list of sites to avoid; El Buen Fin in Mexico in mid-November; Click Frenzy in Australia and Shopping IL in Israel, both in November, with dates set by their organizers each year. Amazon's autumn Prime Big Deal Days usually land in early October and are announced only weeks ahead.

The core skill

Is the discount real?

A percentage means nothing on its own. "40% off" is a claim about a reference price, and the reference is where the tricks live. The classic move is to raise a price in October so that the November "sale" returns it to what it always cost. The second classic move is to compare against a manufacturer's list price that no store ever charged.

You do not need to trust anyone to check this. You need the exact product, the price it was actually sold at recently, and the total you will really pay.

Know them by sight

The traps, and the counter-move
for each.

Every one of these is legal somewhere, common everywhere, and designed to work on a shopper who is in a hurry. None of them survives a shopper who knows the exact product, the recent price and the final total. Read the list once now; on the day you will recognise them in a second.

Notice that none of the counter-moves need a tool. A tool can make step three faster and step seven visible, which is what Muchita is for; the discipline is yours either way.

What the law already promises

The rules on a "was" price, by region.

You have more protection than most sale pages suggest. These are the rules that govern reference prices and pressure tactics in the markets where Muchita is used most. They are summaries; the full text is one click away in each card and in Sources.

European Union

Any announcement of a price reduction must show the prior price, and the prior price is the lowest price the trader charged in the 30 days before the reduction. This is Article 6a of the Price Indication Directive, added by Directive (EU) 2019/2161 and applied across the EU since May 2022. Member states may add details for goods on sale less than 30 days or reduced in steps. Countdown timers and fake scarcity fall under the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive.

Directive (EU) 2019/2161 on EUR-Lex

United Kingdom

A "was" price must be a genuine price at which the item was actually offered. The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 lets the Competition and Markets Authority fine a business directly for misleading pricing, fake reviews and hidden mandatory fees added late in the checkout, without first going to court.

Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024

United States

The Federal Trade Commission's Guides Against Deceptive Pricing say a former-price comparison must be against a price at which the article was actually offered, in good faith, for a reasonably substantial period. A "list price" comparison is only proper when that list price is the price the item is generally sold at in the market.

16 CFR Part 233 on eCFR

Brazil

The Consumer Defence Code guarantees clear and adequate information about price and conditions and prohibits misleading advertising. Around Black Friday, Procon-SP publishes complaints and a list of sites it recommends avoiding. Discounts that only exist against an inflated October price are exactly what the term Black Fraude describes.

Lei nº 8.078/1990 (Código de Defesa do Consumidor)

Australia

The Australian Consumer Law prohibits false or misleading representations about the price of goods, including "was/now" comparisons where the "was" price was not charged for a reasonable period before the sale. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has taken action against retailers over exactly this.

If a store breaks these rules, a screenshot with a visible date is the evidence every consumer authority asks for. Take it before you buy, not after.

Follow the money

How free shopping tools get paid.

Most coupon, cashback and price-comparison extensions are free because the store pays them. When you click an offer or apply a code, the tool places an affiliate cookie, and if you buy, the operator earns a commission. That model is legal and common. It becomes your problem in two cases: when the payment decides what you are shown, so a coupon that pays the tool ranks above a better one that does not, and when the tool replaces someone else's referral with its own without saying so. Both were alleged in a widely viewed investigation of a popular coupon extension in December 2024 and in lawsuits filed afterwards; the operator disputes the claims. Comparison portals have their own version: sponsored positions and listing fees paid by the stores that appear.

None of this means you should avoid free tools. It means you should know which question each one is answering, and who pays for the answer. Five questions settle it.

Muchita's answers to those five: it is free with no affiliate links and no paid placement; retailer links and the checkout are never modified; it starts only when you ask; optional analytics are off until you turn them on and never include the products or stores you look at; and every result links the offer it was verified against. That is the whole business model, and the reason this guide can afford to be blunt.

On the day

The eight-step checklist.

Twenty minutes of preparation beats an hour of refreshing on the day. Do the first three steps the week before; the rest take a minute each when you are about to pay.

  1. Decide the exact product in advance.

Write down the model number and the variant you want. On the day, buy that, or consciously choose something else; do not let a bigger percentage pick the product for you.

  2. Record today's price.

Screenshot the price and the page with the date visible, and check a price-history tool where one exists. This is your reference; the store's "was" price is theirs.

  3. Set a target, not a discount.

Decide the price at which you would be happy to buy, in your currency, including shipping you expect to pay. A target you set in advance is immune to red banners.

  4. Compare the same product across stores, item price first.

Check several stores for the identical model and variant. Sort by item price; then look at shipping as a separate line for each.

  5. Verify the seller, the condition and the returns policy.

Marketplace or store, new or refurbished, and how many days you have to return it. Read the warranty line if the item costs more than you would shrug off.

  6. Check the total at checkout before you pay.

Fees, currency conversion, tax added late and a shipping estimate that changed. If the total is not what the page promised, that is your answer.

  7. Pay with protection.

Use a payment method with chargeback or buyer protection, especially at a store you have not used before.

  8. Keep the receipt and the advertised price together.

If the price drops further in the return window, many stores will match or refund the difference when you ask. Your screenshot from step two is the evidence.

Where Muchita fits

What Muchita does on a sale day,
and what it does not.

Muchita Shopping is a free Chrome extension for step four. On a product page, one click asks it to find the same model and variant at other stores and to verify each offer's item price against the offer page itself. The result shows the verified item price with shipping disclosed separately and a link to every offer it checked, including the ones it rejected and why. Nothing runs until you ask, there is no account, and it earns nothing from your purchase.

Questions and answers

Fair questions,
plain answers.

When is Black Friday 2026?

Friday, November 27, 2026, the day after US Thanksgiving. Cyber Monday is November 30. Most stores run the same campaign for the whole week and many for the whole month.

Is Cyber Monday cheaper than Black Friday?

Usually not in any consistent way. They are one campaign for most retailers, so the same price runs from the Friday, or earlier, through the Monday. Decide by the price of your exact product against its recent history, not by the day of the week.

How can I tell whether a discount is real?

Compare the sale price with the price the exact model actually sold at in the previous 30 days, using a price-history tool or your own dated screenshot. In the EU the shown "prior price" must be the lowest of those 30 days. If the reference is a list price no store charged, the discount is staged.

What are the most common Black Friday traps?

An inflated "was" price, a list-price anchor no store ever charged, a lookalike model with a slightly different number, fees added on the last checkout step, countdown timers and fake scarcity, a third-party marketplace seller behind a big store's page, refurbished sold in the style of new, and fake shops that exist only for the season. Each has a counter-move in the traps section above, and none of them needs a tool.

Are coupon and cashback extensions safe to use?

Many are legitimate and useful. Understand that the store usually pays them a commission when you buy, then read the listing's privacy practices and check whether the tool rewrites links or modifies your checkout. Keep the ones whose incentives you can see.

Does Muchita earn money when I buy something?

No. Muchita is free, has no affiliate links, no paid placement and no account. Retailer links and the checkout are never modified, and the link you open is the retailer's own.

Does Muchita show price history?

No. Muchita verifies the price of the exact product at other stores right now and shows the evidence. For the previous 30 days, use a price-history tool or record the price yourself before the sale.

What if the cheaper offer is from a marketplace seller?

Muchita shows the seller and excludes offers whose condition, availability, currency, tax basis, membership requirement or commercial model does not pass its checks. A third-party seller changes returns and warranty; read those before you treat the lower price as the better deal.

Which countries does this guide apply to?

The dates are international. The legal cards cover the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, Brazil and Australia. Muchita Shopping itself works on product pages in many markets and its interface ships in 39 languages.
