Winter clearance 2026-27 · Updated September 6, 2026

January sales 2027,
and what clearance really is.

The winter clearance runs from Boxing Day, Saturday December 26, 2026 into February. In parts of Europe the dates are not a marketing decision: Belgium fixes them in statute, France by ministerial order, Italy region by region. Elsewhere the shops choose. What never changes is the nature of the goods. A clearance is old stock, and the skill is telling old stock you want from old stock nobody wanted.

In short

A clearance is last season's stock: model years being replaced, discontinued lines, the colours and sizes that did not sell. That can be excellent value, and it is a different thing from a discount on the current product.

Several countries fix the dates by law. France's winter soldes open on Wednesday, January 6, 2027, Belgium's on Saturday, January 2. Germany and Spain have no statutory dates at all, and each Italian region sets its own.

Your rights do not shrink because the price did. In the EU a "was" price must be the lowest of the previous 30 days, the 14-day online withdrawal right covers reduced goods, and a fault is a fault whatever the ticket said.

The calendar

When the winter clearance
actually runs.

There is no single January sale. There is a British clearance that starts in December, a statutory Belgian month, a French period fixed by order, twenty Italian regional calendars, and a German and Spanish free-for-all. The French date catches people out: the rule is the second Wednesday of January, but it moves forward to the first Wednesday whenever the second falls after the 12th. In 2027 the second Wednesday is January 13, so the soldes open a week earlier than the headline rule suggests.

Market Winter 2026-27 dates Who sets them Worth knowing
United Kingdom, Ireland From Saturday, December 26, 2026 Each retailer "January sales" that start in December. No statutory period.
Belgium Saturday, January 2 to Sunday, January 31, 2027 Statute, art. VI.25 Normally opens January 3. That is a Sunday in 2027, so the law moves it to the 2nd.
France Wednesday, January 6 to Tuesday, February 2, 2027 Ministerial order Second Wednesday of January at 8am, brought forward when it falls after the 12th. Four weeks.
Italy Early January into February or March Each region, by decree Sicily has published January 5 to March 15, 2027. Most regions confirm in the autumn.
Germany No fixed dates Each retailer The statutory Winterschlussverkauf is gone. "WSV" is a label with no legal window.
Spain No fixed dates Each retailer Liberalised in 2012. Traders choose when the rebajas run and for how long.
Netherlands, Poland Late December into January Each retailer Uitverkoop and wyprzedaże are trade custom, not regulated periods.

France also carries derogations: an annex to the order gives Meurthe-et-Moselle, Meuse, Moselle and the Vosges a start on the first working day of January, and sets separate dates for Corsica and the overseas collectivités. Check the annex, not the national date, if you shop there. The French and Belgian dates above follow directly from rules already in force; Italian regions other than Sicily had not published 2027 calendars when this guide was written, so treat early-January starts there as expected rather than confirmed.

The core skill

What a clearance price
actually is.

Black Friday asks whether the discount is real. A clearance asks a harder question, because the discount usually is real and the product is what needs checking. Shops reduce the stock they want gone: the model year being replaced, the colour that sat all season, the sizes at the ends of the range, the line the buyer has dropped. None of that makes the goods bad. It does mean the percentage describes the shop's inventory, not your purchase.

Know them by sight

The traps, and the counter-move
for each.

These belong to clearance specifically, rather than to sale season in general. Most are legal. All of them work by making the reduction feel like the product.

None of these needs a tool. What a tool can answer quickly is one question: is this exact model, in this exact variant, cheaper somewhere else today? The rest is discipline.

What the law already promises

The rules on clearance prices,
by region.

Clearance is not a legal grey zone. Reductions, sale periods and returns are all regulated, and in several countries the period itself is written in statute. These are summaries; scope and enforcement differ by member state, so open the link that matters to you.

European Union: the "was" price

Any announcement of a price reduction must state a prior price, and that prior price is the lowest the trader applied in at least the 30 days before. This is Article 6a of the Price Indication Directive, inserted by Directive (EU) 2019/2161. Member states may let the pre-campaign price stand as the reference where reductions rise progressively, and may allow shorter periods for products on the market under 30 days.

Directive (EU) 2019/2161 on EUR-Lex

European Union: returns and faults

For a distance or off-premises contract you have 14 days to withdraw without giving a reason. The Consumer Rights Directive ties that to how the contract was made, not to the price, so it covers clearance goods bought online. Buying in a shop is different: there is no general change-of-mind right, only whatever policy the retailer offers.

Directive 2011/83/EU on EUR-Lex

France

The winter soldes start on the second Wednesday of January at 8am, brought forward to the first Wednesday when the second falls after the 12th, and run four weeks: January 6 to February 2 in 2027. A trader may only discount goods paid for and offered for sale at least a month before the period opens, which is why genuine soldes stock is old stock.

Soldes: règles à respecter - Service-Public

Belgium

Article VI.25 of the Code of Economic Law restricts the words soldes, solden, opruiming and Schlussverkauf to January 3-31 and July 1-31, with the start pulled back a day when the 3rd or the 1st is a Sunday. January 3, 2027 is a Sunday, so the winter period opens on January 2. A waiting period in the preceding month bars announced reductions in clothing, leather goods and footwear.

Code de droit économique, livre VI - Justel

Italy

There is no national date. Each region fixes the start and the length of the saldi by decree, which is why the calendar changes across a regional border. Sicily set its 2026-27 dates in a decree of October 2025: winter saldi from January 5 to March 15, 2027, with promotional sales barred in the run-up. Most regions publish in the autumn.

Saldi 2026-2027 - Regione Siciliana

Spain

Sales periods were liberalised in 2012. Article 25 of the retail trade act now says sales may take place in whatever seasonal periods each trader considers commercially interesting, and that each trader sets the length freely. So there is no official start to the rebajas, only a convention around early January. The EU prior-price rule still governs how a reduction is announced.

Ley 7/1996 de Ordenación del Comercio Minorista - BOE

Germany

The statutory seasonal clearance windows did not survive the recast Act Against Unfair Competition, in force since July 2004; the current Act has no Winterschlussverkauf provision, so "WSV" is a marketing label with no dates attached. The Act does presume that advertising a price cut is misleading where the higher price was charged only for an unreasonably short time, and the advertiser must show otherwise.

Gesetz gegen den unlauteren Wettbewerb (UWG)

United Kingdom

No regulated sale period: the January sales are trade custom and most start on Boxing Day. The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 prohibits misleading actions and omissions, including invented "was" prices and fees revealed late, and lets the Competition and Markets Authority impose penalties directly. Separately, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires goods to be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described, at any price.

Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024

Two distinctions carry most of the weight in January. A fault is not a change of mind: rights over goods that are broken, misdescribed or unfit apply whatever the ticket said, and a "no returns on sale items" sign does not touch them. A change of mind is the opposite: online in the EU you generally have 14 days, in a shop you have whatever the retailer chose to offer, and that can legitimately be narrower during a clearance.

Follow the money

How "best January sales"
roundups get paid.

Every January the same article appears: the best deals in the sales, updated live. Most of those pages are funded by affiliate commission. The publisher earns a percentage when you buy through its link, so the products shown are drawn from retailers with a programme, and the ranking rewards what converts. That is legal, and the better publishers disclose it. It still shapes what you see, and it explains why an independent shop with a lower price is rarely in the list.

Deal newsletters and coupon extensions run the same model with an added step: a cookie is dropped when you apply a code, the code shown is not always the largest available, and cashback arrives after a qualifying period, a minimum spend and an exclusion list. Substituting another publisher's referral was alleged against a widely used coupon extension in a December 2024 investigation and in lawsuits filed afterwards; the operator disputes the claims. Five questions settle how much to trust any of it.

Muchita's answers to those five: it is free with no affiliate links and no paid placement; retailer links and the checkout are never modified; it starts only when you ask; optional analytics are off until you turn them on and never include the products or stores you look at; and every result links the offer it was verified against. That is the whole business model, and the reason this guide can afford to be blunt.

Before you pay

The seven-step clearance check.

Do the first two steps in December, while the current prices are still on the shelf. The rest take a minute each in front of the item.

  1. Write down the exact model and variant in December.

Model number, capacity, colour, size. A clearance is full of near-identical variants, and the one on the reduced ticket is not always the one you researched.

  2. Record December's price with the date visible.

Screenshot the product page before the clearance starts. That screenshot, not the shop's crossed-out number, is your reference in January.

  3. Ask why the item is in the sale.

Superseded, discontinued, ex-display, returned, or an end-of-range size. Each answer changes what the price is worth, and staff will usually tell you.

  4. Check the same model at other stores today.

A discontinued model may be cheaper, dearer or simply gone elsewhere. Compare item price first, then delivery as its own line with a real amount.

  5. Read the returns policy for reduced goods.

In store, a change-of-mind policy can legitimately be narrower during a clearance. Online in the EU the 14-day withdrawal right stands. Photograph any sign that says otherwise.

  6. Confirm condition, warranty and what is in the box.

Boxed and new, or ex-display, or a return. Ask for the warranty length in writing if the item costs more than you would shrug off.

  7. Check the total at checkout, then file the receipt with your screenshot.

Delivery and fees appear at the last step. Keep the receipt and your December screenshot together in case the price moves again inside the return window.

Where Muchita fits

What Muchita does in a clearance,
and what it does not.

Muchita Shopping is a free Chrome extension for step four. On a product page, one click asks it to find the same model and variant at other stores and to verify each offer's item price against the offer page itself. The result shows the verified item price with shipping disclosed separately and a link to every offer it checked, including the ones it rejected and why. Nothing runs until you ask, there is no account, and it earns nothing from your purchase.

In a clearance it answers one question well and leaves the rest to you: whether the reduced item in front of you is actually reduced against the rest of the market today.

Questions and answers

Fair questions,
plain answers.

When do the January sales 2027 start?

It depends on the country. In the UK and Ireland most clearances open on Boxing Day, Saturday December 26, 2026. Belgium's statutory period runs January 2 to 31, 2027. France's soldes d'hiver run Wednesday January 6 to Tuesday February 2. Italy is set region by region, usually in the first days of January. Germany and Spain have no fixed dates.

Why do the French soldes start on January 6 and not January 13?

The rule is the second Wednesday of January, but it moves forward to the first Wednesday whenever the second falls after the 12th. In 2027 the second Wednesday is January 13, so the start shifts back to Wednesday January 6 and the four-week period ends on Tuesday February 2.

Are January sale discounts real?

Usually the reduction is real and the product is the question. Clearance stock is last season's: superseded models, discontinued lines, leftover sizes and colours. That can be very good value. Check what the exact model sold for in December, not what the replacement model lists at now.

What does "up to 70% off" actually mean?

That at least one item somewhere in the range is reduced by 70%. It says nothing about the item you want, so work from that item's ticket. In the EU any announced reduction must show a prior price, and that has to be the lowest the trader charged in the previous 30 days.

Can a shop refuse returns on sale items?

Not for faulty, misdescribed or unfit goods; those rights apply whatever the price was. A change of mind is different. Bought online in the EU you normally have 14 days to withdraw, including on reduced items, but in a physical shop returns are the retailer's own policy and it can be narrower during a clearance.

Is there still a Winterschlussverkauf in Germany?

Not as a legal period. The statutory seasonal sale windows disappeared with the recast Act Against Unfair Competition, in force since July 2004. "WSV" is now a marketing label any retailer can use at any time, so there is no official German start date to wait for.

Should I buy early in the sale or wait for further reductions?

It is a trade between choice and price, and you have to pick one. Early gets you the size and colour you want. Later gets a lower number from whatever is left. If you need a specific variant, waiting usually loses it.

Does Muchita earn money when I buy something?

No. Muchita is free, has no affiliate links, no paid placement and no account. Retailer links and the checkout are never modified, and the link you open is the retailer's own.
