Singles' Day 2026,
and what 11.11 really costs.

Alibaba stopped publishing a headline sales figure for the festival after 2021, so any recent total you see quoted is a third-party estimate. Campaigns rarely stop at midnight on the 11th, though unused coupons usually do. And a cross-border delivery estimate is a range, not a promise, in the busiest fortnight of the year for those carriers.

• Separate the platform price from the landed total. Only the landed total, with shipping, import VAT, any duty and clearance fee and your card's currency spread, belongs beside a domestic price.
• Know which coupon is which. Product discounts are already in the price. Store coupons come from one seller; platform and cross-store coupons from the marketplace. They stack in an order the platform sets, so read the basket total, not the labels.
• A cross-store threshold is a spending target. "Spend 60 across any stores, get 8 off" pays the platform when you add a filler item to reach it. If you would not buy that item in March, it is not a saving.
• Deposit pre-sales lock money, not always the best price. A deposit reserves a price and commits you to paying the balance in a short window on the day; miss it and the deposit is commonly forfeit. The pre-sale total is not automatically the floor, so write it down and check the live listing on the day.
• Countdown flash sales are a schedule. Limited quantities released at set hours spread traffic across the day. The same item is often at the ordinary campaign price the rest of the time.
• Add import VAT and duty before you compare. In the EU, VAT is due regardless of value and customs duty above 150 EUR. In the UK, VAT is charged at the point of sale up to 135 GBP. In the US the low-value exemption is currently suspended.
• Price the return and the wait into the decision. Return postage to China or Southeast Asia often costs more than the item, so the practical remedy is the platform's dispute process. Decide what you would do if it arrives wrong before you decide the price is good.

• The pre-sale that is not the floor. The deposit page shows a total you will not easily re-check later. Counter-move: screenshot the full pre-sale total with the date visible, and compare it against the live listing before paying the balance.
• The forfeited deposit. The balance window is a few hours, on a busy day, in a timezone that is not yours. Counter-move: convert the window into your own timezone and set an alarm, or skip deposit pre-sales entirely.
• The cross-store threshold. You are a few units short of a coupon, so the platform suggests a phone case. Counter-move: compute the basket with and without the filler. If the filler costs more than the coupon returns, the coupon is not for you.
• The coupon with its own clock. Collected coupons often expire inside the campaign, at an hour that is neither midnight nor local. Counter-move: check the validity window when you collect it, and count only coupons still alive at checkout.
• The photo that is not the item. Renders, borrowed studio shots, and a colour described as "as picture". Counter-move: ignore the gallery and read the specification table: dimensions in centimetres, weight, materials, plus buyer photos in the reviews. If those numbers are missing, the listing is not describing the product.
• Sizing from somebody else's chart. Clothing sold cross-border is often cut to a chart that is not the EU or US one. Counter-move: measure a garment you own, compare centimetres against the listing's measurement table, and ignore the S/M/L label.
• Reviews that belong to something else. A listing with many variants can pool reviews across all of them, so five-star reviews for a cable sit under a charger. Fake and incentivised reviews have also been widely reported, and the platforms say they remove them. Counter-move: filter to the exact variant, sort by recent and by photo, and read the one- and two-star ones first.
• The new store with the perfect score. A 4.9 rating built on thirty days and forty orders, in a storefront that appeared for this fortnight. Counter-move: check how long the store has traded and how many orders it has shipped, not only the score.
• Import charges collected at the door. Checkout said nothing about tax, then the carrier asks for VAT plus a handling fee before releasing the parcel. Counter-move: look for a line saying VAT is included at checkout; if there is none, budget your national VAT rate plus a fixed handling charge.
• The return that costs more than the item. A refund offered on condition you post the item back, at your expense, to an address abroad. Counter-move: read what the platform promises for your country before buying, and when something goes wrong open a dispute with photographs rather than agreeing to ship anything.
• The buyer-protection clock. The dispute window runs from delivery, not from when you open the box, so a gift bought on 11.11 and unwrapped in December is often outside it. Counter-move: open every parcel the day it arrives and diary the last day of the window.
• The counterfeit and the near-model. Branded goods at a fraction of the brand's price, or a model number one character away from the one that was reviewed. Counter-move: search the exact model number outside the marketplace. If it exists only there and has no independent reviews, treat the comparison as unknown.

China's own consumer protection law governs sales inside China and is often invoked around 11.11. It is not summarised here because we could not link an authoritative English text of the current version, and we do not summarise law we cannot cite. For a cross-border order the practical remedies are the platform's dispute window first, your payment provider's chargeback rules second.

• Who pays it? If the marketplace pays, the incentive points at a completed purchase there, not at your landed total.
• Does the payment change what you see? A tool that will not say how it ranks offers, or which it leaves out, cannot be checked.
• Does it touch your links or your checkout? Rewritten links, injected codes and modified baskets are how a commission gets captured. A tool that never changes the retailer's page has nothing to capture.
• What does it declare that it collects? Every Chrome Web Store listing has a "Privacy practices" section. Read it before installing; "web history" means what it says.
• Can you open the evidence? A price claim you cannot click through and check is an advertisement. One that links the offer it was verified against is information.

1. Fix the exact product first.

   Model number, variant, capacity, colour, revision year. Write it down, then buy that or consciously choose otherwise.

2. Record the domestic price now.

   Screenshot that exact model at a store in your own country, with the date visible. It is the only reference you control.

3. Compute the landed total before the coupon math.

   On paper: item price, plus shipping, plus your national import VAT rate, plus customs duty if the consignment is above your market's threshold, plus a clearance or handling fee, plus what your card charges to convert currency. Coupons apply to one term in that sum, not to the sum.

4. Read the seller and the dispatch location.

   How long the store has traded, how many orders it has shipped, and where the parcel actually leaves from. A local-looking listing that dispatches from abroad is the same parcel with a different label.

5. Check the delivery window against the date you need it.

   If the item is a gift with a date attached, treat a wide estimate as a reason to buy at home instead.

6. Collect only the coupons you would have used anyway.

   Skip anything needing a filler item to reach a threshold, then read the basket total before and after each coupon.

7. Compare the landed total against the same model at home.

   Item price on both sides first, shipping and import charges as separate lines. Black Friday follows sixteen days later, at stores with a local returns address.

8. Pay with protection, then diary the dates.

   Use a payment method with chargeback or buyer protection. When tracking says delivered, open the parcel that day and calendar the last day of the platform's protection window.
